Metastasis, which is the spread and growth of cancer cells from its original site to distant organs, is responsible for the vast majority of cancer related deaths. Despite major advances in treating primary tumors, therapies that effectively stop or control metastatic disease remain limited.

At the Fendt Lab, we aim to change this. Our research focuses on understanding how cancer cells adapt to the unique physiology of individual organs and patients in order to survive, spread, and grow. By studying how metastatic cells interact with their surrounding environment, including immune cells, stromal cells, and tissue specific conditions, we identify new vulnerabilities that can be translated into smarter, more personalized treatments.

Rather than a one size fits all approach, our work is driven by a central question: Why do some patients develop aggressive metastases, while others do not - and how can we intervene early and effectively?
